The paintings (“A Holy Isle Compendium of Lost and Falling Stars” + “The Constellation Song”) were painted successively in 2011-2012; A single High-Resolution image file was taken for each, then worked and re:worked in Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro, and several other programs. When my mom could no longer read, or operate the TV remote, or barely walk, she became bored, frustrated, and isolated. In an effort to entertain her, I reverted to an old pastime of ours – puppetry. Throughout my college years and beyond, puppetry became a wing of my artistic pursuits. My mother Nonnie became my number one fan. She even performed with me on occasion, interacting with my characters to the delight of our family and viewing public. I was floored by her improvisational comedy skills and commitment; we had natural chemistry. So, in this new strange reality we found ourselves, with no puppets readily available, I grabbed two very old and long-forgotten stuffed animals from my sister’s bedroom, a raccoon and a bear, and put on a show for her. She loved it. She lit up. She started improvising whole conversations with them. Our chemistry was still alive. With permission from her doctor, I started filming these interactions and posting them to YouTube. Nonnie, Raccoon, & Bear was born. Nonnie passed away this November due to complications from Covid 19. We were able to be there during her final moments. It was actually quite beautiful. We feel blessed to have witnessed this at a time when many families are restricted from doing so. My dad, Dave, played her the web series on his computer while she was in hospice. With her eyes closed and barely able to speak, Nonnie laughed and laughed and laughed as the playlist looped. I feel so grateful to have created this project with her and to be able to share her humor, life, and love with all of you. It is a message of understanding, hope, the power of humor in the face of adversity, and the surprising elasticity of love. ------------------------------------ From Joel: Nonnie, Raccoon, & Bear: A Tale of Alzheimer’s recounts three months I spent with my mother from her first diagnosis of Alzheimer’s to her eventual transition into a memory care facility. It details the emotional toll on my family, the unknown health insurance pitfalls, and the daily challenges of caring for someone with this disease. It also shows the flip-side. When my mom could no longer read, or operate the TV remote, or barely walk, she became bored, frustrated, and isolated. In an effort to entertain her, I reverted to an old pastime of ours – puppetry. Throughout my college years and beyond, puppetry became a wing of my artistic pursuits. My mother Nonnie became my number one fan. She even performed with me on occasion, interacting with my characters to the delight of our family and viewing public. I was floored by her improvisational comedy skills and commitment; we had natural chemistry. So, in this new strange reality we found ourselves, with no puppets readily available, I grabbed two very old and long-forgotten stuffed animals from my sister’s bedroom, a raccoon and a bear, and put on a show for her. She loved it. She lit up. She started improvising whole conversations with them. Our chemistry was still alive. With permission from her doctor, I started filming these interactions and posting them to YouTube. Nonnie, Raccoon, & Bear was born. Nonnie passed away this November due to complications from Covid 19. We were able to be there during her final moments. It was actually quite beautiful. We feel blessed to have witnessed this at a time when many families are restricted from doing so. My dad, Dave, played her the web series on his computer while she was in hospice.
